Fibre has traditionally been very costly, but FirewireDirect is working to bring the costs down and make the technology available for a wider variety of applications. There are more advantages to fibre channel than just bandwidth.

Fibre channel can be used to connect up to 126 devices into a storage area network and hubs can be used so that one device can not break the loop. In contrast to Gigabit Ethernet or SCSI technologies, adding storage units to a Fibre Channel network won’t lead to congestive data loss or reduced overall bandwidth.

The host computer receives data at the same high speed as the RAID system sends it out, bandwith guaranteed and highly scalable, Fibre Channel technology can address up to 126 devices per loop.

The Ultra Elite 12 Fibre features an IBM high performance RISC processor combined with 512 megabytes of high-speed cache provides for high throughputs across up to 12 hard drive mechanisms. With support for large drives, currently up to 250GB per volume for rock solid proven storage that can approach 3 TeraBytes!

Also, the security of redundant power supplies, fans and power sources all of which are hot swappable.

Your data is protected with support for RAID levels 0, 1, 0+1, 3 and 5 (3+ and +5 can be configured with hot spares). The VE supports automatic rebuilding for an array in the event of a hard disk failure. Rebuilding is transparent and does not restrict access to your data. Optional spare kits are available which include a power supply, fan assembly and a tested HDD mounted in a spare tray. All of these features contribute to reduce downtime in the event of a hardware failure.

The VE also provides the maximum amount of flexibility for different data storage needs and can support up to two servers of same or different operating systems. Configuration of the RAID volumes is simple and can be performed entirely from the front panel. With support for multiple concurrent drive sizes and RAID types, the VE can be configured to maximize performance by allowing data to be stored with the most efficient RAID type. Volumes can be created to support RAID 1 for maximum redundancy, RAID 3 for large sequential data files, RAID 5 for high transaction processing or smaller files and RAID 0 for non-redundant workspace.
